The Microsoft Office Online services are a suite of products that are available through the Web which have similarities to the earlier and discontinued Office Live subscription services. Office Online offers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher, and InfoPath, which is similar to Lotus Notes. Office Online is incompatible with the previous Microsoft Office Live Services. The online services offer a free subscription to Office 365, starting at $79 per year, with the option of an individual subscription for $9.99 per month.[196]

A new version of Excel was released on May 5, 2014. It is the first version to be released in this wave of new versions. In addition, Excel 2013 for Mac will be retired on September 30, 2015, and as of September 30, 2014, users of Excel 2013 for Mac will be forced to use Office 365. Users who have not upgraded to Office 365 by this date will be forced to purchase a new license for Excel and Microsoft Office 365. Microsoft stated that there will be no alternative to Excel 2013 for Mac. Microsoft released Excel 2016 for Mac in October 2016, which will be compatible with Office 365 and will no longer require a subscription.[198]

In April, 2008, Microsoft made Office Web Apps as a bundle available for download to all Office 365 subscribers. It allows users to install applications on their web browsers from the Office Store. In addition to basic web applications such as Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Excel Web App, it offers Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft OneNote Web Apps. The suite is available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 devices and is increasingly becoming a popular browser-based alternative to the traditional desktop applications.[194] The U.S. Government requested Office 365 in 2013 to replace the U.S. Department of Energy's Lotus Notes system.[195]
