Bambakkadu Soman (also spelt Bambakkadu Soman) is a fictional character in the James Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He is a Nigerian based intelligence officer who is employed by SMERSH. Soman serves as the leader of the Nigerian Secret Service, Nigeria's external intelligence agency. He is portrayed by Richard Kiley in the film.
Fictional character biography
Soman was hired by SMERSH to kill Napoleon Solo, a Russian defector who had been provided shelter in Nigeria.
Soman was married to another Russian agent and they had a son named Karl (played by Peter Carsten in the film). Soman was also the former head of SMERSH.
In the film, Soman murders Napoleon Solo, in the guise of trying to assassinate a high-level ally of SMERSH, the U.S. Secretary of State (played by Terence Young). Solo was played by Sean Connery.
Possible parallels to real life
The character of Bambakkadu Soman is strongly based on the real life character of Egerton Ehikhamenor, who had been a high-ranking member of the NNPC, Nigeria's national oil company. In 2003, Ehikhamenor was released from jail, after serving a five-year sentence for fraud. After his release, he returned to his old job as head of the foreign intelligence service.
